They are used to practise loading and unloading, to safely release the hammer or striker when dry firing, and to check that a firearm feeds, chambers and extracts properly without live ammunition. A snap cap is designed to take the firing pin's strike, which protects firing pins that can be damaged by repeated dry firing on an empty chamber.
